Municipal water is rarely unhealthy, but it may be unpleasant; private well water may be unhealthy, unpleasant, or both. A private well water may be high in mineral salts, sediments, and chemicals. It may contain soluble iron, which leaves fixtures black or rusty. A harmless, but nasty-looking bacteria, called bacterial iron, can feed on iron particles in well water, coat pipes and fixtures with an orange slime. Water may have a high sulfur content making it taste and smell awful. It may contain Giardia, a common microorganism, that causes flu-like symptoms. And finally, it can contain nitrates, disease carrying bacteria, lead, and cadmium. Most public water is monitored and treated, but treatment facilities can’t do everything.
